Maria Leonard Olsen: Do One Thing Every Day — and You Don't Have to Quit Your Day Job to Start

Maria is a practicing attorney and the author of eight books, a TEDx speaker, and host of a podcast with 300+ interviews. She didn't blow up her legal career to do any of it. She built alongside it.

At 50 — divorced, sober, and living alone for the first time — she gave herself a birthday gift of trying 50 new things in a year. That project became her book, 50 After 50: Reframing the Next Chapter of Your Life, which led to a book tour, which led to speaking, which led to more books and more talks. One boat kept the next one afloat.

Her advice for the woman sitting at her kitchen table with an idea she hasn't told anyone about:

You have a treasure. Do one thing every day to build on that dream… Do one thing every day that scares you a little, because courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is feeling fear and doing it anyway.

She's also refreshingly honest about money. The law practice is her safety net while the writing and speaking grow:

"I feel really lucky that I have this safety net of my legal practice… I'm not going to quit my law job anytime soon, but I am putting away money and building a nest egg."

The takeaway: You can start your boat as a side boat. Keep the financial security, publish or ship something every day, and learn to say no — because "saying no to someone else is often saying yes to me."
